Purchased this game 12 years ago and gave it up when I moved to new location. It is a sequel to Panzer General from SSI. It is surprisingly fun to play like a chess game. You have to plan where to deploy your infantry, artillery, planes, tanks, etc. to effectively win each battle. As you gain in victories your military "pieces" can be improved and enhanced. You play as either the British, American or Russian forces during WWII in North Africa, Europe or the Russian steppes. It is simple to learn and a new player can get started right away. There is a campaign feature or a single battle (scenario) feature. You play on a map with hexagon grids, and you have to remember to replenish your troops from time to time. For me there are not enough naval battles or options for possible naval battles to play. The game features only land and air battles, with naval ships as auxilary to the main battle. It is based on the older Win 98 system so, you have to use the compatibility wizard to get the game running as it was originally intended. Windows XP will run it just fine. Do not know if Vista system will accommodate the play. It is rather simplistic compared to today's recent first shooter-oriented games but if you like strategy type game play - this is a classis of that genre. The "pieces" are icons and therefore static. If you like a lot of action, movement, or special effects- this is not a game for you. You can save a game in the middle of a battle and restart where you left off. You can also replay the battles time and time again to see if you can improve on the outcome. I like having it as an option in my game library. Buy it if you like to "think" about your next move.Read full review
