So...here we have a collection of twelve different games from three (arguably) different consoles. Ten of the games are from the days of the SEGA Genesis, while one is a port over from the SEGA Saturn, and another is from a programmer from SEGA who decided to create his own fun little program (which was never intended to be a stand-alone "disc" game). ALL of these games are definitely classics, with just about every single one (in my opinion) being a greatest hit back in its hayday. So, let's take a lookie at what we have here. Upon first glance, the SEGA Smash Pack appears as a Godsend for anyone who was old enough to own a Genesis in the 1990s. Take a look at my INITIAL review writings: "A MUST HAVE for anyone who grew up in the age of the 16-bit wars. Games such as Altered Beast, Revenge of Shinobi, Wrestle War, and Golden Axe showed us why Genesis/MegaDrive was SOOOO much better than the Nintendo Entertainment System when SEGA went 16-bit in summer of 1989. Phantasy Star II and Shining Force, two of the best RPGs to grace the Genesis console, are also featured in this little gem of a disc, thus providing the gamer with literally hundreds of hours of role-playing fun. Sonic the Hedgehog and Vectorman are legendary classics in the side-scrolling action/adventure platforms. Streets of Rage 2 and Virtua Cop 2 provide arcade-type fighting and first-person shooting action, while Columns and SEGA Swirl scratch that puzzle-gaming itch with very enjoyable gameplay. I would HIGHLY recommend this collection to any person looking for a taste of nostalgic wonder! ^_^" So...why, after all of my excitement, did I come back and change a "MUST HAVE" score of Excellent to a more "Meh..." score of Average? One simple reason: These aren't the original Genesis games on the disc. "What do you mean, NeiFirst?" Good question. The may LOOK like the original Genesis games. In fact, the cheat codes for the Genesis versions WORK on their SEGA Smash Pack versions. HOWEVER, much to the dismay of myself and MANY other SEGA enthusiasts, the Genesis games were transferred to this disc in EMULATION form. Meaning, some of the games have a sort of "graphical disfunction" in terms of smoothness of animation and SLOW-DOWN (there was hardly any slow-down in Sonic I on the Genesis...WHY is the emulated version acting as if it were an SNES port???). Meaning, some of the games are glitchy (wait until you pop in Golden Axe...). MEANING, why did they choose to use some sort of EXTREMELY-basic MIDI sound recorder for the SFX, rather than grabbing the sound straight off the cartridges?!? Streets Of Rage 2 sounds extremely "cutesy" for a action/fighting game...this TOTALLY does not work! The game I, NeiFirst, hail from...Phantasy Star II...sounds HORRIBLE! Don't even get me started on Golden Axe (this poor guy suffered the worst of it). The ONLY games that are pretty much exact copies (including sound) would be Virtua Cop 2 and SEGA Swirl, which are not emulations. All in all, this disc really had some major potential. Unfortunately, SEGA had to kill a great thing (or in this case, ten great things) by substituting NES-style MIDI SFXs instead of the original soundtracks. The games are still just as good as they were ten plus years ago, but the soundtracks just kill it. If you don't mind turning on your favorite music to play while you mute your televison, I say pick it up and enjoy a little gaming nostalgia.Read full review
