It may have been the first android tablet but it's no dinosaur; and it seems to me that the earlier of the two Xoom models, which is the heavier and more robust in feel, is the one more eagerly sought by buyers. It has an excellent camera inbuilt (better overall than the Xoom 2's, I think); and it has the best speakers & sound of any tablet that I know. A worthy rival to the Ipad of it time! I was lucky enough to get a treasure trove of Xoom accessories with the Ebay deal I struck.

Previously used the Fantastic, although smaller Blackberry Playbook, which many complain about not catering for many "Apps", well i personally couldn't care for cluttering up my tablet with any apps, the playbook works as is without any additional stuff except a decent Pdf reader which is "Repligo", and you can find out how to install this online as i did. But back to the xoom. I decided to get a bigger tab as i had been abroad a couple of times recently and thought a bigger screen for watching movies in hotel/flight would just be perfect. I had not previously considered anything other than a 7" tab as my main use is for travelling on buses reading books whilst listening to music and thought anything bigger than 7" was just too much for the purpose. But i now use the xoom for travelling local and although you can't stick it in your pocket like a 7", i usually have a shopping bag anyway and i do like the bigger screen, which brings me to the first drawback of the xoom, which is that it has an active menu bar when watching videos, so it reduces your screen size which i do not like at all, i didn't get a bigger screen to have a portion of it unavailable and if i'd known this i'd not have went for it, but there simply isnt any one tablet available yet at a reasonable price (second hand) that has all the features you would want. The best i have found is the rather expensive asus 700 infinity which i will no doubt acquire down the line second hand. Next problem with xoom is the sound, great with phones but very basic and low output without, there is of course a remedy in the form of an app "volume+" which i bought and this increases your output to more appropriate level, although just not in same class as playbook. one more niggle is finding anything downloaded, specifically PDF's, for which i had to buy astro file manager, without it or similar, you simply can't detect where they are stored. So, what i've found is that xoom NEEDS apps to function at it's best, which in my opinion should never be the case, i wish they would make a 10" playbook. anyway you can get them nearly new on ebay for £130 which is very good and even with the niggles, there simply isn't currently anything else with the features and quality at that price available, end of story.Read full review
I couldn't see the point in tablets, never thought I'd have a use for one that couldn't be covered by either of my existing computer options. However, I did find a potential application and thus started my journey through the bewildering array of tablets on offer. I was soon able to weed out those which just wouldn't be suitable but that still left a few candidates for the 'ideal' model or me. At almost half the original price, 32gb of onboard storage, the ability to expand through the micro SD slot by another 32gb and the inclusion of USB port this seemed to be the one and those with more knowledge pointed me this way. I have to say it is a nice unit, nice big responsive screen, great battery life and loads of connectivity options. However, the key criteria I required - which I was advised this could do - is only met by 'rooting' the device which I was loathe to do. The main thing I wanted of it was the facility to read memory cards from my cameras and USB flash drives. With the camera connection kit it will transfer images directly from the camera but that does mean tying the camera up whilst it downloads. Without rooting, it won't read external drives or accept memory cards in readers so it won't meet what are my very specific requirements and that's why I've only given it 4/5 for features. I ended up paying more money to buy a Samsung Galaxy Tab which despite lacking the variety of connectivity options the Xoom has on offer, does meet what I readily admit are very demanding requirements. In all other respects, the two are almost indistinguishable. The Samsung is thinner and lighter which some might prefer but I have to say I preferred the relative 'chunkiness' of the Xoom. If you're looking for something to browse the web, pick up emails, maybe read an ebook or compose a letter on the move this is a fantastic bit of kit to do just that. Now I have one tablet, I can see possibilities that would involve more than one unit and I'd have no problem supplementing the Samsung with two or three of these.Read full review
As a PC person and not too interested in Mac's, I was checking details on various tablets. Eventually, I focused on the Motorola Xoom. I was very sceptical on the claims made about this unit. However, various YouTube videos and C-Net put forward a healthy arguments in a favourable way. I emailed my son, very much a Mac person . . he uses them in his working environment. He too was a bit wary on the claims. Looking on eBay I found one which suited me, so I went for it and got it. 2 days later I had my hands on this beast, and what a beast. This, in my opinion lives up to and beyond my expectations. I got my son to bring one of his Mac tablets [yes ONE of them]. Comparing them for size weight and overall performance, he was very impressed. So much so, he is visiting China soon and said he will be looking for a couple for his children to use and leave him with his Mac tablets. The cameras back and front, the micro SD card slot [up to 32 GB] can double the memory. An abundance of FREE apps covering almost every interest is great and a added bonus. I'm taking this with me to France on holiday to use while we're out and about, without the burden of carrying my laptop which will be back at the Gite. My 3 yr old grandson, still looks on it as my iPad . . but, he'll learn. What else can I say, except . . . go for it!Read full review
