I do like a movie where the characters set a slower pace than what we are experienceing in real life... I think I would have liked more views of the landscape and the beach and water, and I dont think the love letter was a good thing for the inhabitants of Loblolly, it may have changed their lives but not for the better, If Johnny hadnt read the letter he might not have pursued Helen, and then she would have been free to be with George, it's all in the timing, now George is returning to New York and Johnny is going to college and Helen will be alone...and that's a bummer. Of course I love Ellen, great to see her in a movie, but didnt see any happy endings for any of the main characters
This is one of those delightful little movies that's so quirky and well done you have to watch it over and over. Perhaps I watch movies again and again more than most people because I play them on a corner of my computer screen while I work. So my tolerance and enjoyment for a film has to be because the film delights and yet not distracts. This movie with simple and well done performances from all players, even the new young actress Julianne Nicholson and especially older favorites such as Kate Capshaw, Tom Selleck and Ellen DeGeneres, pleases me more with each watching. Furthermore the letter of the title is quite well done. So that which moves the whole story forward is exactly what it should be.
The Love Letter is one of my all-time favorite movies and I am rather particular about movies. It did not get stellar ratings early on but there are things about the movie that I find irresistible. First, the ambience is incredibly endearing. It's set in a small seaside community that is beautiful in a simple way. The cast is great. Ellen Degeneras is witty and spot-on in her role as best friend to lead actress, Kate Capshaw (Spielberg). Blythe Danner and Tom Selleck round out a talented cast of people living in a small East Coast community. The plot centers around a love letter, found by book store owner (Kate Capshaw). The sedentary community gains romantic spirit as the letter inadvertently goes from person to person. I think that what I like most about this movie is the feeling it evokes. The mood is enthralling and the lesson is simply, yet poignant. There is a romantic in everyone. I think of this as a "feel good" movie, worthy of multiple watching on rainy days under the covers.Read full review
A wonderfully clever, intricately woven, lighthearted movie, The Love Letter is just a lovely (ableit short) romp through a quaint little town filled with unusual people who may just not be so unusual after all.... when a few of them discover a brilliantly written and intensely heartfelt love letter. Each of folks who find the love letter is sure they deserve it (in one way or another)! even if they are not so sure of who its from. The unexpected twist at the end was really refreshing and Ellen Degenerous simply shines in this movie and reminds us again how talented she really is. The Love Letter gets 4 out of a possible 5 stars from me.
This love letter was thought to belong to several characters which sets the stage for some funny interactions. I love the story!
