The Ibanez Soundtank pedals are highly under-rated, you need to try them even if you can afford "better". Same with Danelectro....I never had much love for the small-box ones, but the early versions of the overdrive and the echo are excellent for the price...get 'em.

I think this pedal sounds better than the BOSS DS-1 Distortion. I believed the DS-1 to sound a bit too harsh, mid-scooped and fizzy. The FAB Distortion sounds like it has more mids, and the treble is not ear-piercing. This pedal is not suitable for modern metal, since even with the distortion knob cranked, it never achieves a level of saturation conducive for metal. The FAB Distortion sounds more like a very, very dirty overdrive, more conducive to classic rock, and alternative rock (à la Green Day). I do think this is a good pedal for children and beginners especially, since they tend to want to set the distortion way too high, and scoop the mids, neither of which are possible with this pedal. This is a buffered bypass pedal, which means the pedal will still affect your signal even when the pedal is off (i.e. in bypass mode). Some people hate this, others do not. I think the buffer is satisfactory. On some amps, when I am using a different distortion pedal to the left of the FAB Distortion, and the FAB Distortion is bypassed, sometimes I hear some white noise. I'm not sure what the deal is with that. For a budget distortion pedal made primarily of plastic, I recommend the Behringer UD300 Ultra Distortion (clone of BOSS DS-2 Turbo Distortion) over this one, but the FAB Distortion is definitely an OK pedal.Read full review

excellent price for a metal type sounding pedal.

The pedal is a basic distortion effect with three settings- tone, gain, and distortion range. At the lower and middle levels, the distortion is vintage - a cool late 70's sound - while at higher levels, it gives a raw 80's sound. The best thing about this pedal is its price - around $18. At that price, the D1 is a sure bet for guitarists looking for a simple but cool sounding effect!
