The Red Baron or Flying Away With History

If the viewer is interested in an accurate historical portrayal of the life and career of Manfred von Richtofen, then they will be completely disappointed in this film. In spite of some very good acting, it is pure fiction. There is so much wrong with the film that it is fruitless to attempt to itemize its inaccuracies. On the other hand, the flying sequences, which do make up a very good proportion of the film are absolutely breathtaking, the finest I have ever seen. To turn this film into a love story was a grave mistake and does its subject a great injustice. See it, by all means, however, for the flying sequences.

  • GOOD for the specail effects.

Well now for the REAL REVIEW. People say the historical facts are right on?? Come on guys, ARE YOU ON DOPE? the Baron did not smoke, Hawker did not fly a SE5a but a Dehavilland DH2,He shot down Hawker b4 the SE5 was invented. Richthofen never had a conversation with Roy Brown and Roy Brown Flew a Sopwith Camel not a SE5. It is obvious not a single person did their homework with this film. Not in one aspect of it. Richthofen had blue pajama's ,also he never went after a bomber convoy at night, nor was there ever proof of a relationship with a nurse. WHO in the hell did the research on this film? ELmer Fudd? And people say historically right on and people believe it?? WRONG. Well the good thing. it has fantastic special effects but being 99.9 percent of them are digital, big ...

  • The Red Baron (DVD, 2010)

I enjoyed this movie and found it historically accurate. I have read in the past that he was actually terrified to go back up after being severely wounded. He felt that the war would never end and that he and his brother would also die as had all of his friends. He had revealed to many people as early as Jan, 1918, that he thought victory was impossible, and that with the Americans having entered the war, Germany would be destroyed if peace wasn't negotiated. I also found that there was a drawn out story that just abruptly ended. This movie did not end well.

  • The Red Baron does smoke,..

Firstly,Id like to address a couple of points in someone's review here. slopoke35 wrote in their review that the Baron didnt smoke. This is untrue, since I have two photos of him with a cigarette in his hand. Also,Goering wasnt in Jasta 1 during the time that Richthofen was in it.They never met.He wasnt an important figure until he came into his own during Hitlers reign. As to this film, yes, there was a bit of license taken with the plot. The Brown/Richthofen visit in the field in No Mans Land didnt occur, adn the Nurse wasnt his girlfriend (although his mother did say in her memoirs that Manfred loved one woman in particular,in a gentlemanly and honorable manner). With that a side, this is a perfectly enjoyable movie, and if you want a documentary, watch one. This isnt one,and wasnt meant to ...

  • IMHO this did the Red Baron justice!

If you like historical movies this one was great... the actors fit their parts and the script was very good, pretty historically accurate, great story line, wardrobe and scenery well put together, well worth a watch!
