A quickie: FFJ was a real life Prima Donna Wannabe. A wealthy heiress who was able to help the War Effort by hiring prestigious Carnegie Hall partly to entertain the troops and partly she genuinely (?) thought she was an accomplished coloratura soprano. I first heard her recordings when I was a 12 year old schoolboy and could not believe how bad the singing was, but I never knew very much about the real woman. This movie directed by Stephen Frears the same marvellous British director who gave up My Beautiful Launderette and more recently The Queen. While I think these are superior films, FFJ nevertheless is a luscious production with expectedly fabulous acting from Meryl Streep, ably abetted by Hugh Grant (still a hunk) and the fabulous Simon Helberg as the hapless accompanist Cosme MacMoon. I loved the period settings and costumes. Now it remains to see the French version Marguerite.... Greg Leong January 2017Read full review
