Ever watched a second or third series of a program and thought, heck, this is good, I wish I'd seen the first series! Well, that's just what happened to me - and thanks to EBay, I got my chance! Having watched the first couple of episodes of Series 2 of Hell on Wheels, I just had to see it from the start. So I searched for the "Best Value" on EBay, which for me includes best price and best postage, along with how soon can I get it! I got exactly what I wanted and have now enjoyed the first 4 episodes of series 1 in the luxury of my own home! For those not familiar with this series, Anson Mount is Cullen Bohannon, an American Civil War vet with a vengeful intent - but as to what he is avenging only slowly becomes clear. That his late wife figures large in his dark thoughts gives you some clues to work with and gradually he is able to eliminate those who dun her wrong one by one. Unfortunately, a freed slave, played by Common, kills one of his targets before he is able to get the next name from him. To add insult to injury, Mount is then arrested for the murder. Enter Colm Meaney, fresh from his role as Miles O'Brien in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, in a role based surely on his very surname, the very mean Mr Thomas Durant. His goodness of heart is shown to be nothing more than his own fierce self-interest, when he realises Mr Bohannon has the skills he needs to get his railroad to the West Coast. As an added incentive, the shrewd but vulnerable Mrs Lily Bell, played by Dominique McElligott, widow of the Surveyor hired by the Union Pacific to find a route to the West Coast, becomes a love interest for both Bohannon and Durant. However, Bohannon has more pressing needs and the lovely Lily will have to wait, sending her of necessity into Durant's bed. The set is stylish, portraying the living hell of a mobile work camp in the 1870s, and the attention to detail exceptional. Although the story moves at a slow pace, you'd be a hard taskmaster to complain as this pace is needed to allow the story to gradually unfold and the various interests and storylines to lay themselves out. Anson Mount is smoulderingly good as the gentleman Confederate laid low by the fortunes of war. Common seethes with angst at the treatment of black workers, still no better than slaves for the most part. Colm Meaney looks and acts the part of the hard-nosed industrialist-on-the-make with firm resolve. But for sheer evil genius in a story where evil is commonplace, Christopher Heyerdahl as "The Swede" (even though he is Norwegian!) is cruelty incarnate. Expect no mercy from Mr Swede, it's not a word in his vocabulary! I have been telling all my friends about this series and I'm delighted to see that series 3 is gradually making its way to our neck of the woods here in Australia. It can't get here quick enough for my liking!Read full review
