As usual the author has a marvelous way of interweaving a good story with historical facts. You can't read her books without learning something. The two main characters, young Mary Anning and spinster, Elizabeth Philpot, develop a wonderful relationship based on their mutual respect of each other and their keen interest in fossils. Mary has an uncanny eye for walking the beach near her home in Lyme Regis, England and eyeing these creatures which have been preserved by nature. The development of the modern study of fossils begins in the early 1800's and is a fascinating story of overcoming traditional beliefs at the time of what could and could not have existed. These two ladies were self taught and became well respected in their fields. One can visit museums in Lyme Regis, London and Paris today to see remarkable creatures, gathered by these two remarkable ladies. I am very tough on handing out an excellent rating...this is definitely a very good read...enjoy!Read full review
I enjoyed this book very much. Fast & easy read - it is fiction based on a true story. An interesting glimpse into the past - when women had so few choices in their lives. I had heard the author on an NPR segment, was interested in the subject matter, so I looked for it on Ebay. The author, Ms.Chevalier also wrote "Girl With A Pearl Earring".
Interesting read especially if you like fossil hunting and achievements of women
