About this product

Product Information

The Crucial CT256M4SSD2 is a solid state drive (SSD) with 256GB of storage. The Crucial CT256M4SSD2 SSD is usable as either primary or secondary laptop data storage. It offers impressive transfer rates and data retention, especially compared to some spinning hard drives. The Crucial CT256M4SSD2 SSD is a SATA drive with a class-leading data transfer rate. It also offers great read and write speeds. These specs should be an asset to any laptop computer in need of a hard drive upgrade. As a SSD, the Crucial CT256M4SSD2, also known as the M4, writes data onto its NAND flash memory rather than onto a spinning disk. Therefore, it has no moving parts, which may convey increases in read speed compared to traditional hard drives. The Crucial CT256M4SSD2 SSD’s chips are from Micron, manufactured in collaboration with Intel. Its NAND flash memory are 25nm, thus making them comparable to many actual Intel processor chips. This short length also facilitates binary data transfer across the chip. The Crucial CT256M4SSD2 SSD also has a much larger cache size (128MB) than many conventional moving hard disks. It adds up to a read speed of up to 415MB/s and a write speed of up to 260MB/s. The Crucial CT256M4SSD2 SSD has a SATA-III interface, rated at 6Gb/s. This Crucial, like all SSDs, comes encased in a compact, sturdy case that may confer greater protection against shocks, impact, and thus accidental data loss, compared to spinning disk HDDs. SSDs tend toward more compact capacities than their conventional spinning HDD contemporaries. This is to keep I/O speed blazing fast. However, its newer technology also allows for the much easier reading and retention of high bit rate, non-compressed files. These include lossless FLACs, high definition movies and other files that require large file sizes. The Crucial CT256M4SSD2 SSD can keep and reproduce these media types at their most optimal quality and detail, thus making audio and/or video experiences more enjoyable. Replay your music and movies as often as you like with the Crucial CT256M4SSD2 SSD. Similarly, the Crucial M4 can offer improvements in terms of game loading and data storage, especially compared to drives with moving parts. The Crucial CT256M4SSD2 SSD comes in a standard 2.5-inch form factor. This allows for a simple install into any drive bay that can take a SATA-III SSD, such as requiring a slot in a laptop with a SATA-III physical interface. This makes the Crucial CT256M4SSD2 SSD an ideal option for a laptop with such a slot to spare, or with one SATA-III slot in need of a hard drive update. The Crucial CT256M4SSD2 SSD could make a perfect main HDD if your storage needs are light to moderate. Alternatively, install this SSD as a secondary drive. This enables you to transfer some of your files or even use it as a boot device. The results will be similar: a snappier system with streamlined, improved storage solutions. The CT256M4SSD2 SSD is a terrific option if you need your games to start quicker, music to stay at high quality or video to stay high resolution. It stores up to 256GB of these files, keeps them on advanced NAND memory and transfers them at up to 6Gb/s.

    Finally got it to work

It is identical to the card we use with our video cameras and deck, but for some reason we could not get it to work. Our media director work at it and made several calls, and finally he got it to work. So I'm satisfied, but wasn't sure I would be at first. It is a good buy for the product.

  • Great drive to buy if thinking of switching to a SSD

Though there are better performing SSD the fact is that this SSD is in the $0.50 to $0.70 per GB and significanly faster than a 7200 rpm hard drive. Great transition from mechanical drive to SSD. If looking for more performance and a more reliable drive that can handle more constant read and writes as well as more random read and writes since Windows purposely uses any where from 2gb to 4gb in the harddrives for virtual RAM use. So paying up to $0.90 to per GB is still reasonable as of Sep.2014. I personally have found it like a good drive to buy and to lower my load times and great for everyday work and the occasianal games I do with it.

  • Macbook SSD excellent

I own a late 2007 Macbook white (Intel core 2 duo 2.2Ghz) with 4Gb RAM. I installed a Seagate Momentus 500Gb hybrid drive last year... it was very good. BUT I have just upgraded to OSX Lion, and installed this new 256Gb Crucial SSD and its amazing. The machine runs even faster than ever. It's a FOUR year old Apple Macbook and it's way faster than my new work PC desktop. It starts from bootup in 27 secs. It loads tricky progs like Final Cut Pro in under 30 secs. Fantastic piece of kit. I had read that older Macbooks have slower data transfer times, so won't really benefit from this kind of SSD...but this is not the case, it's noticably quicker. thanks

  • SSDs make old systems young again

I have now re-energised 2 laptops by replacing the disk with a SSD and the results are impressive. The Crucial M4 is a reasonable price and has worked well in my system. Con - you don't know how hard it has been used and therefore how long it may last. So far has been excellent

  • Excellent option to improve your PC performance. Easy to install.

This is a great performance improvement in obsolete notebook or desktop. After clonning your old hard drive your notebook or desktop changes its performance to incredible levels. Its a very good choice if you do not want to change your old pc. All programs will work as before you change the HD but faster. I recommend !!!
