When traveling for work I use MS Streets & Trips on the laptop. Nothing like a large screen to look at when you're driving in a new town and don't have to carry a separate nav device like my TomTom GO 4CQ01. My 12+ yr old GPS-360 finally went bad when in DC and I had to purchase a GPS-168 because that's all BestBuy had. Of course I needed to also pick up an USB extension as well to make it useful in a car. Well, do yourself a favor and don't even waste you time and money on the GPS-168. I ended up navigating by the map and not by the GPS. Completely inaccurate and slow, very slow. I missed turns so much that I almost threw it out the window. I can't in all good conscience even sell it on eBay. So after I got home I picked up the 500 since reviews say its much better and faster than the 360 was. I can not say its any faster, but so far I can not complain about reception for a device that's 1/3 of the 360. The small size was my only hesitation after dealing with the small GPS-168. My only complaint is the short cable that came with this device and the small suction cup does not hold on like the larger one on the old 360. Good thing I bought a USB extension for the GPS-168 that I could utilize. I later found that I could reuse my longer original cable from the 360 with the larger suction cup to hold it on the window better. So now I'm extremely pleased with the GPS-500 with using my old longer cable from the GPS-360. As far as a GPS receiver goes, it does exactly as it claims with no functional disappointment.Read full review
Was given one of these units, worked very well. Fast cold satellite fix, with very quick warm satellite fix. Accuracy is solid as well. Works great with mapping software capable of using NMEA output (examples include Microsoft Streets and Trips, DeLorme's Street Atlas software). Kind of hard to believe so much punch was packaged into such a small device. I was so impressed by the performance I have begun purchasing additional units here on eBay for tinkering with. I discovered these GPS units have standard serial interfaces. The black dongle (and in some cases a black plastic bulge on the USB cable) does the serial to USB conversion. This means if you are an electronics tinkerer, you will love these! You can crack the plastic shell open, solder a pin header to the GPS board's contacts and make them work with an Arduino by using them in conjunction with the Adafruit GPS library. Baud rate is 4800 so keep that in mind if you're buying one to tinker with!Read full review
I bought this as a receiver for my laptop running MS Windows 7 along with MS MapPoint for GPS trip planning and navigation on the road. I prefer it over the factory model in my car/Acura which costs a fortune to keep upgraded and is very outdated even when you do update. I love this MS Pharos Unit with the adapter. It is completely 'Plug & Play'. The only think I would change would be to make it all one piece. I'm not sure what the thinking is behind making it into 3 pieces. (Make the connections wear out so you have to buy a new set?) I did like some of the features of my old unit better but it isn't MS Windows 7 compatible. It had a longer cord and a magnet which you could put on the top of your car. This one is more compact and just works without any setup.
Still works as if brand new. No problem linking to DeLoram Street Atlas.

The GPS-500 Sirf III is an excellent gps receiver for use with MS Streets and Trips. They work great if not tampered with. The last two I bought were pried open and had to be returned. Sellers, the SIRF III Chip inside is not useable elsewhere, so stop prying the units apart then selling on Ebay. I took back my negative rating of one seller for a refund, but will not do it again. In summary, an excellent and durable product.
