  • Poor execution of wireless

As a wired-only product, this is probably a good bet. As a wireless router or access point, skip this model. Regular signal drops (several per day, no matter what the settings or FW you choose). Worst part is that it takes an eternity for the wireless network to come back up. If the router is rebooted (which is sometimes required to recover wireless operation), count on around 5 minutes to get a stable (in the relative sense of the term) wireless signal. WiFi range is relatively poor and seems to vary noticeably over time even if you stay in one location. If you want to shut the wireless off entirely, there is not an explicit way to do that. Here's the response from D-Link: "To disable the wifi on the DSR-250N, go to Wireless - General - Access Points. Right click the entry and set ...

  • Good router- watch out for old firmware if you buy used

I bought one of these because i wanted more ports. The one i bought had version 1 hardware and the earliest firmware. The wireless was not usable until i upgraded the firmware. If you buy an older one check the firmware before you waste a lot of time trying to make it work. The configuration has lots of options. It will take a lot of time if you use advanced features. The good news is that you can save your configurations and restore them if you need to. If you want dual band don't buy the version 1 hardware. It is only single band.

  • Outstanding VPN router

There are LOTS of inexpensive WiFi routers (MIMO even) - easily 30% less expensive than the DSR-250N, but typical WiFi routers target home users & have NO VPN capabilities. The DSR-250N sports 25 VPN tunnels - not something the average home user would value, but if you care about network security, exposing your IP address, the DSR-250N makes a particularly strong showing. Other versions of the DSR-250 have only 5 VPN tunnels. one has 75 - be careful which model you're buying. I'm a OLD fan of D-LINK, three decades good experiences with their products. Negative with THIS seller is the Euro style power plug, useless in America.
