Installing Deskstar As Primary HD for Win XP
The Deskstar HD arrived and was detected by Disk Management in my main computer, so I immediately set about installing it as Primary HD in my other computer. The jumper illustrations on the label are so tiny and printed in a faint red ink, I had to get a pair of reading glasses to see clearly. There are instructions for 16 and 15 head configurations as well as other options. I set jumpers as indicated to Master and proceeded to load a fresh install of Win XP which went just fine. The drive runs well and is fast enough for my purposes. The problem is, although the computer sees it as Disk "0" Primary HD in BIOS, it can't find it to boot up and after three or four minutes I have to choose F1 to continue. At that point, it boots fine and works nicely with no further complications. I tried ... Was just looking for a deal on a 80Gb hard drive. External Enclosure was a bonus. Both items work great. A real bargain. Trust in Hitachi quality. 80Gb minimum size desired for practical computer with modern operating system. Drive passed all diagnostic tests with Western Digital's Life Gaurd program. Mad Dog External HD Enclosure effortlessly detected and drivers automatically installed under Windows-7 and XP. Came with Windows-98 driver disk which is handy because I have systems running that OS as well. Very satisfied!Was just looking for a deal on a 80Gb hard drive. External Enclosure was a bonus. I have found IBM/Hitachi Deskstar drives to be bulletproof. Many of the PC's that I get involved with are because of virus, worms or malware, but some are failed hard drives. Since installing a $200 drive into a $150 PC is not going to happen, I have found Deskstar drives to be a very reliable option. They are readily available and usually at a good price. A few have come DOA, but at the price some sell for that is expected. Most E-Bay sellers have replaced dead drives without question, the others I chalk up to the cost of chasing bargains. I have a 12 year old IBM Deskstar in my own PC that runs as well as if it were new.I have found IBM/Hitachi Deskstar drives to be bulletproof. Superb Hard Disk
Bought for my linux box I built out of spare dell parts. Works great for what I'm using it for, nice speed, and decent storage at a pretty amazing price.

Nice Solid Hard Drive
Nice solid hard drive, very reliable. Small by the latest standard ("only" 80 gigabytes), but an excellent choice for refurbishing older machines, especially with IDE drives becoming harder to acquire now.
