I have a good third party flash for my Sony A350, but it does not have wireless capabilities, and as I've gotten more serious about taking better portrait type pictures the importance of getting the flash off the top of the camera has become more of a priority for me. The F36AM is a good, dependable unit with wireless capability. It only bounces in the vertical plane rather that side to side as the higher priced units in the Sony line do, but as a backup flash it is more than adequate for my needs.
A nice flash if you need more power than the on board flash, based on a successful MINOLTA design. The unit is discontinued, yet it might be all you need. Recycle time is fairly fast with rechargeable batteries. Neat feature is the wireless off camera use. Very easy to use. The head moves up and down - only negative side is the lack of a swivel head, which you actually might not need at all. Discontinued, thus you can get a real bargain on this excellent working flash. It can even be used down to 17mm Super Wide Angle!
This flash is an excellent accessory for your Sony alpha camera. Options like wireless flash offer great versatility. However, it has largely been superseded by the HVL-F42AM, a newer model with a better guide number and a few additional features. Only get the HVL-F36AM if you can find it at a great deal like I did!
The Konica/Minolta heritage is very clear on this flash. I particularly like the High speed sync and the wireless mode that are standard with the unit. These units often sell for less than the K/M flashes that preceded them, making the unit a very good buy. The weak point is the clip on flash diffuser for wide angle shots. Subsequent Sony flashes have this feature built in.
Like all Sony/Minolta flashes, the wireless control is excellent. The 36 is powerful enough for most uses. One major drawback is the lack of manual control (cannot manually set power). Other than that, it's a great starter flash or a moderately priced second flash.
