This is more than a beginners model and a great deal when less than $80.00!
It works just as advertised. It is noteworthy that not all information offered by sellers specifies that $80/year or $20/3 months cost is necessary for map updates. I have seen lifetime maps shown on some Tom Tom's but on this one nothing was said and I never got responses from any seller that I inquired about this. Also, it is noteworthy that most other services have costs as well such as "Traffic Reports", "Fuel Prices", etc. The unit does come with the maps it was advertised to have but nothing to indicate what year the maps were created. Do your research on the various models prior to purchasing a "Deal" to make certain it has what you want as options and recurrent costs. This TomTom XXL 530S US and Canada model has many helpful functions that make its use practical and ... It works just as advertised. This TomTom XXL 530S US and Canada model has many helpful functions that make its use practical and enjoyable. Like most technology, there will be newer releases with improved or added functionality so it is best to decide what your minimal needs are and purchase that model. The $53 I paid for this model was a good deal. It comes with software that installs on my laptop for updating the unit when needed and it backs up the units software 'before' updating it to protect from problems that seldom occur during an update. I do enjoy the ability to customize most features. You will find that this model has many ways to find locations and to navigate to and from points of interests as well as locating any kind of business or other destination as needed. The night time display is another welcomed default setting with the option to change the times for it or turn off. So many other options for customizing the icons, voices, map colors, etc., etc., go far beyond the basic need for GPS application but make this model more of an experience. The last feature I will speak of is the alerts. Having audible alerts when traveling above a specified speed for more than 3 seconds or approaching ticketing cameras or various other optional alerts offers the driver far more than a simple GPS guidance but upgrades the experience to that of a technologically designed cockpit of the 21st century. Unless of course you have been exposed to and are used to more advanced on-the-road machinery, this may also be your feel as well when first using this technology.

TOM TOM XXL 530 S GPS (great tool!)
I bought this to avoid 6 pages of mapquest and struggling to read it as I drove. I really like the display and how you can change it for night viewing so it won't blind you as you drive. Also, if you pull off for gas it will recalculate to give you instructions back to the highway. Will do the same if you get off track for any reason! Hearing the turn warnings is great and saves making the wrong turn! You don't have to mount the thing, but can set it anywhere up in front of you. I like the fact you can program your destination easily (and I'm not techno saavy so this is a HUGE deal). Also you can put in your destination at your kitchen table and then not start it until you want to! YAY! It came with car charger. TomTom sets the gold standard for GPSs and this one is no exception on its category. This specific model just functions: turn it on and after a few seconds it is up and running beautifully. TomTom should work MUCH more on the user interface, though. The icons are good-sized and well designed but accessing simple and usually used functions is often cumbersome and requires unnecessary multi-steps - like changing the brightness of the screen, or experimenting with different visions of selected maps, or storing favorites locations. Besides that, its build is excellent, the sound's great and the screen size is quite comfortable. A Great Purchase Experience Buying A Used Tom-Tom XXL 530S GPS Unit
The Tom-Tom GPS unit was received in great condition: it is full featured and works very well! It updated quickly, finds multiple satellites with ease, and issues instructions well! This was an extremely great value, not only for the price, but also for its functionality. This GPS will guide me easily on my motorcycle trips, and was very easy to personalize & make it my own!
