Bayern polarisiert. Wie bei kaum einem anderen deutschen Staat gibt es zahlreiche Bewunderer - und ebenso viele grundsätzliche Gegner. Die einen empfinden die bayrische Geschichtevorwiegend als eine glänzende Erfolgsstory: Sie sehen Wittelsbacher-Monarchen wie Maximilian I. Josph, der mithilfe tatkräftiger Beamter zu Beginn des 19.Jahrhunderts einen modernen Staat schuf, mit Pressefreiheit, einem efifizienten Regierungsapparat - und einer Verfassung, die Bayern 1818 de facto zur konstitutionellen Monarchie machte. Und zwar etliche Jahre bevor solche Reformen in anderen deutschen Ländern wie Preußen und Österreich gelangen. Dann gibt es aber auch die anderen, die vor allem die Abgründe der bayrischen Geschichte sehen: den Verrat, er der eigentliche Gründungsakt des Königreichs gewesen ist, als Kurfürst Maximilian Joseph 1805 den römisch-deutschen Kaiser in höchster Bedrängnis im Stich ließ, sich dafür mit dessen Erzfeind Napoleon verbündete - und für diese Treulosigkeit im Jahr darauf mit dem Königstitel belohnt wurde.
