Konstanz im Mai 1965. Die schwierigen Wiederaufbaujahre unter Konrad Adenauer sind bereits vorbei, die französischen Besatzungsmächte residieren immer noch in der Stadt am Bodensee, den Leuten beginnt es wirtschaftlich besser zu gehen. Die Unterschiede zwischen dem katholischen und evangelischen Glauben spielen jedoch immer noch eine unerbittliche Rolle. Das bekommt auch die junge Beate Adler zu spüren, die mit ihrem Verlobten Anton Sauter einen gemeinsamen Sohn namens Bruno hat. Antons Vater ist Steinmetz und Baumeister am Konstanzer Münster. Eine evangelische Schwiegertochter kommt für ihn nicht in Frage. Obwohl Beate aus Liebe zu Anton zum katholischen Glauben übertreten möchte und bei Pfarrer Sernatinger einen Konversionskurs besucht, hintertreibt der alte Sauter die Hochzeit weiterhin. Hinter seiner Ablehnung steckt mehr, als Beate ahnt.
