UWB systems occupy large bandwidths with very lowpower spectral densities. This feature makes UWBchannels highly rich in multipaths. To exploit thetemporal diversity, a UWB receiver usuallyincorporates Rake reception. Each multipath in thechannel carries just a fraction of the signalenergy. This phenomenon dictates a Rake receiverwith a large number of fingers to achieve a goodperformance. Eventually, the Rake structure becomesvery complex from analysis and design perspectivesand expensive too. This book proposes channel shortening or time domain equalization as atechnique to reduce the complexity of the UWB Rakereceiver. It begins with the definition of channelshortening and provides a summary of the existingchannel shortening equalizer (CSE) designs and their limitations. Consequently, this book presentsseveral CSE designs to reduce the UWB Rake receivercomplexity. A detalied performance analysis of theproposed designs indicates that the CSEs can play asignificant role in designing a simple and costeffective Rake receiver for UWB systems. This bookshould be useful to the research students exploringnew CSE designs and applications.
