Von der Bank wegen drückender Schulden verfolgt, droht die Zwangsschlachtung und der Verkauf zu einem ruinierenden Preis. So dass er vor der Entscheidung steht, die kranken Rinder zu verkaufen und die Herde als gestohlen zu melden, um die Versicherungssumme zu kassieren. Widerstrebend lässt Blanchard sich auf einen zum Scheitern verurteilten Plan ein und muss mit ansehen, wie er verraten wird.
