New Life into an old PC

Like many, I have a couple of ageing PC's, still working on Windows 7, but showing their age and with obsolete technology. The question - junk them or give them a new lease of life? I decided the latter and looked for a substitute CPU to fit my obsolete motherboard, but designed for a Core2 Quad CPU. The Q9550 is not new, but has a history of reliability and prodigious overclocking abilities. Ebay is the place - where else can you pick up a quad core CPU for under £50? I've bought two now, and my PC's are much much faster and I play flight sims, Just drop in the CPU, fit a decent heat sink, adjust your BIOS and they'll run at 3.5G quite happily if you need to, I'll have to upgrade some time, but not yet. A good buy!

  • Tried and tested Old Faithful

There's a reason socket 775 ran for approx 12 years. Rubbish to most people today but I'm not moving on. They don't make high end motherboards like they used too in my opinion. North Bridge and South Bridge was on the board and not in the CPU. I will continue to use the Q9550 in Asus Rampage boards for as long as I can still get the parts. All copper cooling with a fat Zalman on the cpu keeps it to 57 degrees no matter how hard I push it. Won't move on from Windows 7 ultra either. I also have anXP Pro set up which boots in 6 seconds.
