Product Information

This classic television comedy, which ran on ABC-TV from 1975-1982, details the exploits of Greenwich Village police captain Barney Miller (Hal Linden) and his diverse group of coworkers as they deal with an endless stream of strange characters--criminal and otherwise--on the job. Notable for a multi-ethnic cast (rare for television in the mid-1970's) and smart, character-driven story lines, BARNEY MILLER was a success with critics and audiences alike. The strong cast includes Abe Vigoda (whose character, Detective Fish, got his own spinoff series in 1978), Max Gail, Ron Glass, Jack Soo, Barbara Barrie, and Gregory Sierra. This 2-DVD set includes the entire first season.

  • Funniest cop show ever!

"Barney Miller" was one of my favorite sitcoms of the '70's, along with "Sanford and Son" and "Taxi". I used to watch this hilarious show with my mom and dad and we would laugh our heads off at he antics and jokes perpetrated by Barney (Hal Linden), Fish (Abe Vigoda), Wojo (Max Gail), Chano (Gregory Sierra, late of "Sanford & Son"), Harris (Ron Glass), and Yemana (Jack Soo, my dad's personal favorite of the crew). This diverse crowd of Greenwich Village detectives never failed to tickle the funny bone, dealing with crooks and wierdos of all types, along with the bad coffee usually made by Nick Yemana (Barney: "Maroon coffee?" Nick: "It's the color spectrum-brown coffee and yellow water makes maroon!"). Shoplifters, muggers, flashers, hookers, and various and sundry kooks, such as a guy who ...

  • well worth your time

this television series is one of the best police comedys of the 70's well worth your time. I grew up watching barney and the gang like a lot of my generation and am very happy to see it now on dvd and can share it with my children and pass on the joy and laughs i felt as a kid watching barney with my dad. it is set in new york city in the 12th precinct in the 1970's a melting pot of idiots, purse snatchers and hookers with a few other odd balls the officers of the 12th led by ( captain) barney miller show us how good police work and comedy can catch the criminal they use current events of the time to help the comedy it was the 70's (budget cuts, power outages, strikes) you will want to see the entire series thank you jc in Ohio

  • Still hilarious although socially dated

This show still cracks me up, the humor is as fresh as it was 30 years ago, to the credit of both the writers and the actors. Top notch writing aided by top notch actors (and the occasional actress) What's interesting, and eye-opening, is how much our culture has changed in 30 years. In 1975, while spending a lot of effort on showing racial and ethnic tolerance, and women in non-traditional roles, left leaning liberals had no problem with writing comedy about arresting men for dressing in women's clothing. The gay characters that crop up are pretty much universally offensive stereotypes. But I guess everyone needs someone to make fun of, right?

  • Barney Miloler is a classic cop show

I had no idea when, as a teenager, that "Barney Miller" was so brilliant. Much of the 70's television was far more ground breaking than anything on Network TV today. BArney Miller is one of the finest works of art to be produced for television in the 20th century. Underrated or not. It offers a hisatoric look at our culture for the late 70's: the gay low toolerance for gays. Smog and pollution in New York. Sexism. (Way to go Sgt Wentworth!)We can see that both NEw York and times have changed a lot. We're not perfect yet, but it's better now than it was. The 12th precinct was in lower Manhattan, an area now beautiful with Washington Park and NYU students, old men playing chess and the occasional drug deal. The porn shops and hookers are either goned or far more classy. This is a show that ...
