I originally purchased a copy of this game back in the mid-1970's. The original game was stored in various closets and basements and then sold at a yard sale. 40-years later, with some found time in retirement, I rekindled an interest in the game and purchased it from a first-rate seller on ebay. Naval history was always a fascinating topic for me, and this game provided some very playable and interesting scenarios for reenacting many of the most famous historic clashes between square-rigged ships of the line from the late 1700's through the first two decades of the 1800's. For anyone who reads books about Horatio Hornblower, Stephen Decatur, John Paul Jones, or Lord Nelson; or watches movies like Master & Commander, the Wooden Ships & Iron Men games (there were several versions released over the years) are an interesting way to better appreciate and understand what was involved with maneuvering and fighting sailing ships. The games were also easily adaptable for using small metal-cast ship models that added a more realistic looking 3rd dimension to the game. The later editions of the game may have rule clarifications and additional complexity that some players might find desirable, but from my perspective, any of the versions will provide some amusing and enjoyable entertainment.Read full review
