Tv to film remakes have a bit of a checkered history. Some, in relation to the comedy shows they're based on, are pretty good and often they take an episodes plot and stretches it out from either 30 or st minutes to just over 90. The likes of Porridge didn't rely on the storyline of an episode but an original plotline and was a funny film worthy of the series. Steptoe and son had a dodgy first film that wasn't funny but Steptoe And Son ride again more than made up for it, with a short sighted greyhound and a story that involves pretending Albert had snuffed it to get his insurance money to pay off Frankie Barragh. Of course, Universal decided the 80s was a good time to bring back Dragnet. However instead of bringing back the original character, they made it a "30 years later" film with Dan Aykroyd playing the nephew of the original Friday character. Including Tom Hanks as his partner Pep Streabek who doesn't play by the rules per say, Christopher Plummer as a smarmy Vicar, Harry Morgan who reprises his role of Captain Gannon and Dabney Coleman as the Hugh Hefner-type who makes the Playboy-esque "Bait" magazine, Dragnet is an homage that never plays it straight and that is it's strength. It's often funny and when the film does have it's car chases and the occasional shoot out it's handled well enough to be enjoyed. The Blu ray that Fabulous Films has put out is rather lacklustre. Being released last year amdn considering the 30th anniversary is this year, the extras are a trailer and filmographies. A nice little making of or a retrospective documentary would have been nice, but as it stands if you can find a copy cheap enough it's worth picking up and adding to your collection. The picture is nice, crisp and clear And the sound it's audiable. So if youre a fan of the film, id recommend it for just the film only. And that's "just the facts".Read full review
