From a physical handling perspective, the camera could use a little more right hand contact surface to avoid unnecessary pressure on rear buttons and dials. The camera "on" button is not easy to activate for a casual operation. A somewhat concerted effort is required to turn it on and off. The camera seems to always slightly over expose daylight shots. Operationally, it is just a little faster than some other digi-cams I've used but not DSLR fast. The view finder is too small to use if you wear glasses but Ok otherwise. It is not in the least intuitive for the casual shooter but filled with professional operations and technical gagetry. But, it also retains many earlier "canned" photographic modes familiar to other G camera owners. The movie mode is a disappointment when lesser cameras offer a hi-def movie mode. One thing I really like about the G-10 is how fast it boots up so you can begin to shoot immediately. The 3" screen also offers good off-angle viewing but is difficult to use in bright light. I really like the lense quality and the 14.7MP resolution. I love the quality of my older G-5 for overall picture quality and that goes for my new G-10 as well. There is definitely more to play with on this camera so if you like flexibility and want to move up to a point and shoot with lots of fun things to learn. This is your camera.Read full review
I have not owned a point and shoot in 6 years, since I purchased the original 300D. I have had most of the xxxD line up, 20D, 40D, 5D, and now shoot with 5DII and some good glass. However after reading the luminous landscapes article on g10 http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/kidding.shtml, when he shot and printed at iso 80, and compared 13x19 prints with a medium back, I decided to give it a try for a small, leave it in the car, take it any where solution. besides it has video. Initial impressions. Positives: Excellent built, solid, nice finish. Good startup time. excellent knobs, including ISO. Good menu system, esp if you are used to canon DSLR. Decent LCD. Perfect size, pocketable. IS works well. Good Dof (as expected) even wide open, with good landscape results at f4, and 28mm Negatives. Completely useless view finder. you can see the lens through viewfinder, its very dim and just about useless. Movie mode not in 16x9 format, very surprising. Image in 4x3 format, instead of 3x2. Its just odd to me. Image quality. I shoot in raw, convert to dng in LR, and process. Iso 80 is about what 5dII does at iso 800. Iso 200 is a little worse than 3200, and 400 is about iso 6400. The dynamic range is very very unforgiving, compared to a dslr. It is very easy to blow the highlights, and its not recoverable in raw. I would say it has at least 2 less stops on the high light end. The images are also a lot less forgiving when it comes to post processing. they posterize more easily, noise in shadow creeps in even at iso 80 with any exposure/fill light increase. Detail is surpizingly good, at low iso, throughout the zoom range.Read full review
The reason I bought the Canon G10 was to replace the G9 that all of a sudden quit on me 13 months after I bought THAT camera. To say the least I was not happy. Several others have had this same problem and I read where one person got an explanation from Canon that it's due to downloading the images from camera to computer. It burns out the circuitry in the G9. I'm hoping Canon does something for me and the others because of falty workmanship. Meanwhile, the G10 has several improvements over the G9. A wider lens, several new modes, more pixels and in my opionion an improved body. What I don't like: To make the zoom wider they took away from the telephoto end. Also it's hard to find a replacement battery. I can't find another battery (anywhere) locally and will have to order online. I didn't have a probloem finding a backup battery with the G9.Read full review
I have been upgrading my Canon Powershot line forever. When I saw this at my niece's wedding I knew it was next in line. Upon opening the box I could see another fine product from Canon. The camera is well built, has a great viewing screen and some marvelous options that are new to the line. Face recognition is really cool. The pictures are crisp and the shutter is super fast. If you are looking to replace an SD Series, I would suggest not to as this model is slightly more bulky and heavy. It will not slip into your pocket. But if you have an IS Series or even the older G Series, I would say that this guy is without a doubt way ahead. In brief, I give it "2 Thumbs Up"......NF
I personally like how I shopped around before making any final purchases, hoping to find the best deal around. The camera itself was all I had hopped for. While it is a step above from a typical point and shoot it does still open and upload pictures as such. The reasoning behind purchasing this camera was to become familiar with different ISO settings, Light Meter, Shutter speed, F-stop, ETC... Much like everything I was told before purchasing the camera, its a very step by step towards owning an intermediate camera such as the G10 before owning a more high performance camera. I am pleased to say, the photo quality is far great than I every expected, and navigation is like all other Canon's I've owned.
