Turntable-scratched hooks pan whimsically throughout....a more sophisticated Beck relays his own introspective emotions...", 4 stars out of 5 -- "It was skeetering, excited, a grab bag of ideas.", "...Beck has enlisted the Dust Brothers, the producers responsible for...the Beastie Boys' seminal PAUL'S BOUTIQUE. The result: a pastiche of twangy country licks, hip-hop beats, surrealistic folk, jive-turkey rap, and samples...that further affirms Beck's rock-chameleon identity..." - Rating: A-, 5 stars out of 5 -- "Beck stepped out a true maverick, laying hip-hop vocals on top of country guitar lines in one song, paying equal homage to heavy metal and Serge Gainsbourg in another.", "...ODELAY is intoxicating, proving Beck to be one of the era's more inventive songwriters. His observations are as catchy as his...songs....ODELAY is largely upbeat, even punk, but occasionally Beck reveals a sad soul under his clown's mask...", 4.5 out of 5 stars -- "This splatter painting of breakbeats, electric blues, garage-style kitsch, and Dada versifying still sounds fresh...", Included in Q Magazine's "90 Best Albums Of The 1990s.", 8 (out of 10) - "...Beck plunges into the deep foreboding lake of received musical wisdom....All around is madness. A replacement for my original copy. Odelay is one of the best and probably the most interesting album of the 90s.

  • No Losers here!

I always liked Beck's music, but I clearly didn't realise how much until I saw him live at the V festival this summer. I was really enjoying the show (the band were amazing), but I suddenly had a revalation - I knew all the lyrics to the songs, which was odd as I didn't own any of the albums! Anyway, this prompted me to get my act together and buy some. Started off with Odelay (the breakthrough album) and also bought a couple of others. The album is brilliant, really good music and Beck's vocals fit perfectly in a strangely stoned sounding way. I was also really pleased with the quality of the CD I bought - the previous owner had taken good care of it. If you've listened to a few of Becks tracks on the radio and you liked them, then buy the album. It really is great and well worth it. I ...

  • Beck - Odelay

This, his second album, produced by The Dust brothers, was even better than his debut, and established him as a major player. He almost recklessly mixes lots of influences, from Grunge to Hip Hop, to Blues, he mangles everything up. Sonically he throws everything in including the kitchen sink, Tablas, chains, Harps, carboard boxes, harmoniums, feedback.... This just shouldn't work, but the genius of it is that it does...it makes perfect sense in the way more conventional stuff never could...and there are some great tunes here that will stay with you long after the CD goes back in the box. At the time of Odelay, nobody was mashing stuff up like Beck. A must have in your collection!
