these headphones sound great and a r fairly comfortable but have flaws that make me wander what the designers thinking #1 the notorious ribs on the headband, these are as uncomfortable as they look and as everyone says, but just by cutting the middle rib off I ended up making these headphones about as comfortable on top of the head as any other pair of headphones I own #2 the wacky hight adjustment system that doesn’t really work. I don’t understand why akg went tension based, it looks fancier and harder to construct than a notch or friction based set of adjustments, and maybe when these headphones are brand new the tension based system works fine, but these headphones use elastic and as many people know elastic wears out easily and when I got them I wasn't able to fit the headphones to my head. but was able to fix this real easy with the use of zip-ties.Read full review

The AKG K701 Reference-Class Premium Studio headphones are a great studio monitor and DJ headphone with an incredibly accurate sound stage -- producing exceptional highs and refined lows. They are great for music production and DJ'ing because of the single-sided, 99.99% oxygen-free cable. AKG utilizes two proprietary technologies for the K701, including varimotion, two-layer diaphragms and flat-wire, voice-coils that aid in delivering a crisp sound with minimal distortion. The AKG K701s are ideals for professionals in music production, DJs, or casual listeners who desire an accurate sound stage that isn't too bright and doesn't have overwhelming bass. Additionally, each pair of K701s is individually tested and numbered and comes with a 1-year manufacturer warranty to ensure a high level of quality control. The K701s are very ergonomic, employing a leather headband and 3-D form foam ear pads. They're also highly durable and aren't as prone to breaking like other headphones, e.g. Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic, due to the metal arches that they cite as 'unbreakable'.Read full review
Bought a used pair and the sound quality is as many people make it out to be. Great sound stage and very clear instrumentals. Sits comfy - just a little heavier than I thought it'd be. Really happy with the product!

I love the sound of these headphones, very natural, crystal clear and right on. These are true audiophile headphones that reveal every little bit of detail in any recording. Be aware though that these are huge headphones- they look beautiful, the craftsmanship is very good and the materials are of high quality.I got them mainly for my Itouch, and have to say they are not really perfect for portable devices as they come with the big 7mm headphone jack that requires an adapter piece to narrow it down to the 3.5mm headphone jack all MP3 players have these days. The adapter comes with it but it is a long solid piece of metal that will stick out of your MP3,etc player. In my case the Itouch Gen-1 just produces enough amplification to make the 701 headphones sound loud enough to hear each detail, but it is impossible to really crank them up by any means without an additional headphone amp. My wife got the 2nd Gen Itouch, which seems to have a little bit more amplification power- meaning it gets a little louder than my Ipod. If the perfect sound is your number one priority and you can live with all other compromises, these are perfect, especially for the money. Who needs Grado or Staxx reference gear, when you can get close to that performance for a fraction of the cost, especially when buying these used ;-)Read full review
I recently purchased a pair of used AKG K701's from a seller on eBay. I read many reviews about these with the general consensus that they are excellent headphones. And they are! What really helps the headphones to display their sonic abilities is source materials and proper amplification. I CANNOT emphasize this enough. You'll notice certain generes of music display themselves or rather have noticeable sonic characteristics that certain cables/ amplifiers will bring out. Mine had about 300 hrs of break in plus they were recabled by APURE sound this certainly helped but the source material and headphone amps made them truly sing. I noticed on AKGs connected to my headroom amp great sound loads of detail but the akgs were a bit thin in certain frequencies you really had to pay attention to eq settings as well. On the woo audio headphone amp that tube sound is fantastic but It seemed at least to me the woo couldn't supply the amount of volume which caused the AKGs to lack the visceral punch that my sennheiser HD 650s have. But and I mean BUT this was only with pop/ r&b. With jazz or sweet rich classical music anything that has natural accoustical values will make you fall in love with these headphones. I out of pure curiosity tried out a very small hybrid/vac tube amp that I scored for about $40 bucks it uses black gate capacitors Solen resistors primo stuff here folks and what it does with the AKGs is amazing! It seems to combine attributes from the headroom/ woo audios. I get the energy clarity and definition plus the honey sweetness that tubes brings vocals are very natural and balanced. The point is depending on your gear plus the source cables tube preferance etc these things will determine what the AKGs will sound like, what sort of image they will present to you. With good recorded material good cables a well designed amp you'll be happy you bought them. They are comfy and contrary to many opions they have BASS and oh boy is it good!!!Read full review
