In its day this film was regularly screened in every arthouse cinema. It is dark and compulsive viewing and contains everything you would expect from the Polanski stable. The characters are superb. Donald Pleasence at his most camp, Lionel Stander in perhaps his most celebrated role - he had a very similar role in PULP - and the excellent Jack MacGowan's over the top performance. The film location is Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island, Northumberland - a location that Polanski would use again for MACBETH. Shot in glorious mono, the screenplay follows the demise of an unlikely pair of wounded gangsters who end up on Holy Island after a failed robbery on the mainland. The whole effort is character-based and the way they react with thier captive hostages and each other. A black comedy of everlasting merit.Read full review
This film was Polanskies 2nd and ultimitley best. It features a wonderful interface with all the charters, if you can put surrealisim into film without being over the top this is it. The ending is of the NOW it capuslates every emotion to the point of sheer anarchy. Not to be missed.
