The topic of the book sounded really interesting - the opium trade in 18th century. Hover the book contains a great deal of text in pidgin English, a lot of 18th century seafaring jargon and Indian phrases and names. I could cope with one of these but all three makes it very hard going and very difficult to understand.

It is well worth persevering with the small amount of non - English words and phrases as this first part of The Ibis Trilogy really sets the scene for the following two volumes. This trilogy is a masterpiece - brilliant story telling, unforgettable characters and a deep humanity runs through the whole work. It is also very funny in places in spite of the many tragic events it describes. As a critique of British imperialism masquerading as aid, freedom and Christianity it cannot be bettered.
