    paragon timer

    This is a poor quality timer used by most makers of auto defrosting freezers and I keep one in my cupboard for breakdowns. It has cam driven relay contacts and for the compressor circuit it is OK but for the defrost circuit it is badly designed. Relay contacts tarnish with time and go open circuit and if well designed the contacts will go "bonk" and slide over each other when closed. This scraping will keep them clean but there is no sliding for the defrost contacts so defrost fails when the silver contacts close and the defrost heater does not work. I dismantled my first after 5 years service and cleaned the contacts with silver polish. It then lasted for another 20 months before stopping with what appeared to gear seizup. The asking price varies widely with prices up to £190-00 ...
