If all you know about Deep Purple is "Smoke on the Water", stop right here: this album is not for you! Because Stormbringer is not more of the Smoke on the Water style, it’s a rather major departure from it. It features less of the heavy riff based style Deep Purple is known for and more of a melodic, soulful, rhythmic approach to songwriting and arrangement. This album is a unique opportunity for Purple fans and rock enthusiasts to hear the work of five young creative individuals who know no fear and are at the height of their capabilities. Stormbringer was recorded in 1974 during a very turbulent time in the band's history, and while building on the success of their previous album Burn, it is mostly a product of the growing influence of two new band members: the soulful singer/bassist Glenn Hughes and the phenomenal vocalist David Coverdale, later frontman of Whitesnake (for more Purple joy see Whitesnake’s recent release “The Purple Album”). Stormbringer is also a time of declining internal influence of legendary guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who around that time grew unhappy with Deep Purple and soon after Stormbringer left the band to form another remarkable band, Rainbow. This edition of Stormbringer consists of newly remastered original mixes of all songs, four tracks recently remixed by Glenn Hughes, one previously unreleased instrumental, and a second disc, a DVD audio, with the original quadraphonic mix formatted for contemporary surround sound, which I heard for the first time ever and it was quite an experience. Highly recommended for Purple fanatics like myself, for anyone else with interest in this material I would recommend listening to any copy of Stormbringer.Read full review
This is a combo pack with one cd (remastered) and one dvd which includes the original quadraphonic mix. The quad mix is presented in DTS 5.1 sound. This album was originally mixed at Abbey Road. This isn't your typical Deep Purple album in the hard rock fashion; instead, the sound is tinged with soul, funk and jazz elements. David Coverdale's vocals really shine here, and the production in a whole is top notch. The original quadraphonic mix really outshines the common stereo version. Quadraphonic really opens-up the sound field, and now most of us with surround audio can really appreciate the mix. Finally, the release comes with extensive linear notes and vintage pics of the band, recording session, and promos for this album.
OK, so this was not the best deep purple album. Nevertheless, it is deep purple in good standing. There are some very nice songs in here, but what makes this collection worth the money, is the DVD, or I should say, audio DVD version of the entire album. I took off one star because there is no life footage of the band performing any of the songs in this album. Nonetheless, the audio DVD in DTS in Dolby Digital as well as LPCM stereo sounds very good, and improvement over the standard CD.

The DVD in this set is indeed in 5.1 surround . They did a great job of turning the quad mix into 5.1 surround . I had never heard this release before so as a Deep Purple fan I was amazed . Listening to it in surround added a whole different level of appreciation !!!!!!!
