HTSAWB stands alone as the only true soundtrack recording from the AIP beach movies of the ‘60s. The story goes that because most of the movie soundtracks were heavy with Frankie Avalon songs, none could be released due to restrictions from Frankie’s record label at the time, United Artists. Since he had only one song in this movie (he was only in it 7 minutes) releasing a record without him was finally feasible. While the album is billed as by The Kingsmen, they in fact only had one song in the movie and two on the album (the second being a reprise of the title song). The record was, however, released by the Kingsman’s label, Wand. All this aside, the soundtrack is likable enough. Reminiscent more of a broadway type soundtrack than the earlier movies, it runs the gamut from pop to comedy to ballad to surf/garage rock. Annette is at her charming best and Harvey Lembeck is great as always as the inimitable Eric Von Zipper. And where else are you going to hear Mickey Rooney on CD? (Thankfully nowhere). All in all a great piece of mid ‘60s nostalgia lovingly reproduced in true stereo with high quality results. Highly recommended.Read full review
