Outstanding Live Album!!
If you have never been to an RHCP concert you are missing out on an experience like no other. I have been to 3 of their concerts now and there is just no other group out there right now that puts on a live show like they do. And while no live CD can replicate being at an actual performance, "Live at Hyde Park" does a very respectable job at replicating the experience. When I first put it in my stereo system I started jumping around and getting the same feeling of excitement as being at the concert. After listening to the double disc album all the way through for the first time, I was pretty pleased with the quality of the CD. However, there are some drawbacks. Being a live album the mixing in some spots is rather poor. John's backup vocals are often lost and the balance between the instruments on some songs are rather unbalanced. The crowd background during the songs is kept to a minimum though, which is very much appreciated. Other than the mixing the album is very good. The Peppers do a couple of covers during this show including "Brandy" (a very funky 70s song by Looking Glass) and "I feel love". Plus this album has two unreleased songs that can't be found anywhere else. "Sly Rolling Stone" and "Leverage of Space" are both solid tracks. The other thing I really like about this live album is that there is a significant amount of improvising during each of the songs. If you like that sort of thing you'll be blown away, but if you'd rather just hear the song like it is on the album you might be a bit dissapointed. In conclusion I am giving this 4/5 because of the poor mixing, but other wise it is great! I would suggest the "Live at Slaine Castle" DVD by the peppers if you want better mixing plus the visuals to go along with it.Read full review
