A gift from Victor to any fan of the Contemporary Bass
I first saw Victor Wooten [live] when he sat in with Chick Corea at the Blue Note in New York. Despite what I heard about his virtuosity, I had my doubts that he could fill John Patitucci's shoes. I won't dare make that comparison but needless to say he held his own and prompted me to learn more about him. This DVD includes not only Victor's set from the event (joined by his brother and 'teacher' Reggie and Oteil Burbridge) but a Q&A lecture style discussion for the attending fans. Victor touches upon his influences but what I found most poignant was his correlation of the journey of ones quest to learn the language of music to that of a child learning the letters of the alphabet or learning to speak a language in general. Victor also touches on themes such as the 'language of music' ... I first saw Victor Wooten [live] when he sat in with Chick Corea at the Blue Note in New York. Victor also touches on themes such as the 'language of music' in terms of how collaborating musicians communicate cues musically without speaking. He also gives a brief primer of his 'thumping' technique (in 'slow motion') and oh..right, he brings down the house !!, playing some of what he has published on his solo albums in addition to accompanying himself with live multi-tracking (using sampling pedals) on a few of tasty morsels. The DVD also includes a 60 minute interview in which he talks quite a bit more about his influences, growing up, etc. I recommend this DVD to any bass player or fan regardless of affinity to a particular style. I have not yet checked out the rest of Bass Day '98 (other titles from the same event) or Victor's other recorded works but I am about to. I also strongly recommend Jaco Pastorius's "Modern Electric Bass" for those interested in technique and learning more about the man.

I've wanted to buy a bass day dvd for a long time. This was a perfect start because of course , it's "Vic". I love this item it's great for practicing and fun to watch. I will buy more!!
