This is yet another example of the kind of wholesome, enjoyable, family entertainment that was so common to all John Wayne features. The breathtaking scenery of a Pacific island, the catchy island music and interaction of the indigenous peoples all add color to this movie. Fellow actor Lee Marvin, who plays Wayne's war buddy, is equally enjoyable and funny. Rounding out this cast of "Big Name Talent" is Elizabeth Allen, Cesar Romero, Jack Warden, and Dorothy Lamour. A touching story of sensitive human emotions that runs from feelings of abandonment to those of true admiration is beautifully explored in this movie, along with the overcomming of prejudice towards people and customs that are foreign to us. Donovan's Reef is a good 1963 family comedy staring Lee Marvin as Donovan and John Wayne as the Reef's owner. Donovan's Reef is a crazy old film with some wonderful actors and a rather simple plot of a drunk Donovan returning to his island friends from WWII. The island looks a lot like the north end of Kauai. Nice island music plays through much of the movie. The bar fight scenes are rather staged and simple by todays standards but have funny parts. If you have kids or grandkids you will enjoy this colorful film with them. The film has no sex or bad language but has some barroom fighting. When Elizabeth Allen arrives from Boston searching for her father and finds love and laughs in this tropical comedy find. Enjoy
