This is my second used ipod, don't buy new!! Ipod's are a great device, but in my opinion not worth the new asking price when used is a fraction. I have a 5th gen video 30gb and picked up this 40gb 4th gen. The 5th gen is certainly a nicer machine, much thinner, however both produce decent sound and otherwise work the same. Could be me, but it seems like the 4th gen sync's slower. I do prefer the color/larger screen of the 5th, but seriously, forget about watching movies on it, so for that reason, if you can pick up 40gb of 4th gen for 1/2 a 30gb 5th gen, do it! In both cases though, I have an older Samsung YH-999 Yepp that has a screen twice the size, has far better color then the 5th gen, has better sound then either and displays its menu, _including_ album art, on my TV screen, neither Ipod can do that. Ipods on the other hand have endless add-on's available and iTunes is actually pretty decent compared to Windows Media (which the Samsung uses). I've spent a little over $150 for both ipods, a couple of excellent Griffin docks, a Pioneer adapter cable and a Monster FM cable, hell of a pile of good stuff for that kind of coin.Read full review
I dissed on the battery quality on my first review - I have various charging options - finally found one that worked. Once I got it to charge completely, on several occasions - it's continued to work fine. The sound quality is excellent - I wouldn't rate battery life as top notch on the longevity scale - but for the price, it has been a good value purchase!

I have always prefered the larger and more "built" Ipod players, for the "feel" of 10,000 songs is great, lets you know there is more when you press that forward button. Yet, I recently purchased an Ipod classic (6th gen) and the feel was great and it had 80 GB of storage; but, the Harddrive died on me after about a year of use, and it holds no more than 500 songs. But I have loved this Ipod Photo ever since I recieved it! It has been working hard since 2005, and still retains factory performance. The 40 GB Ipod Photo runs smoothly and will freeze for a few seconds (only if you fill it up), but it has never had any problems running. I have alot of Jazz, so I can only get about 7000 songs onto this thick beast, but all the songs sound great! And the sound quality will really be impressive if you compare to the newer Ipods. The bass isnt as muddy and frequencies as low as 30 hz are brought out to give you a greater soundscape (perfect for Jazz and Classical). It has the built in power to drive my Sennheiser stereophonic headphones without the use of a headphone amp...and on the go, thats REALLY helpful. Though, many complain about battery life, and I can see where this might effect the overall quality of the Ipod Photo; yet it depends on the time and place of usage. At home, I listen to my library via Y-cable on my stereo. I dont drive very far weekly, and I dont ever jog with a HDD player (no matter the skip protection). The battery life works for my application, but some may think otherwise. It is true, this Ipod will start to loose is battery storage capability over the years of usage, but mine hasent lost much...probably an hour or so...and thats nothing. That aside, the build quality it amazing! Like most apple products, it feels sturdy and very masculine (if I may say). The chrome back WILL scratch (even if you blow on it), so a case is recommended. But there is nothing wrong with this device on build, its all strong and chizzled. The only thing that seems to go wrong mostly with HDD ipods, is the hard-drive. And its true! Side note: This thing is huge! Take ANY ipod classic today and compare, you wont believe how thick this sucker is! Although some dont like a big HDD player in their hand, I enjoy the feel of this 4th gen 40 GB. It is a very big peice of stainless steel, and if you keep it clean...makes a damn good mirror :) Overall, I am very very impressed with this product and it wont take you very much to find a good one cheap. I would debate that the older gen Ipods have better sound quality, build quality, and more "feel" than the most current apple devices out now. Tip: MANY will agree with me, you may get excited with buying a 249$ ipod classic, but most apple products arent worth what they are asking for! So do yourself and your WALLET a favor...buy used players that have been cared for and referbished with skill, so you dont get a dud or a fake. The iPod Photo is a good pick for an all around MP3 player, not only the quality of the sound is excellent (you get better sound output if you rip your songs at higher rates than 128 bps, or use the Apple lossless option, instead of the standard MP3 128 bps), and it is even better if you buy a good set of light weight headset and put away the ones that came with the unit. The iPod Photo sounds a little "brighter" than the other models, and apparently this has been noted in forums, the highs seem to sound a bit higher and "hotter" than the rest of the iPod models. As with any iPod, this unit is very easy to use and set up, thanks to Apple's interface, unlike other players where you have to learn a lot of commands and fuzz around for hours to get the basics of the unit. The iPod just works as expected. Thanks Apple! The iPod Photo is a good unit to carry around pictures that you would like to share with others, although the screen is very sharp and clear, the iPod will never replace the standard photo prints to share pictures with others. But overall it is an easy way to see your pictures and even display them on a TV set with the additional attachment. The iPod Photo won't play videos like the newer models do, but if you only want to listen to your music with high quality, style and ease of use, along with sharing your photos with friends and family, then this model is for you.Read full review
I have bought the Apple iPod 4th generation used. Although the case has scratches the quality of the music is great. It is unbelievable how many songs can fit on this small device. I didn't get an instruction book with it but it isn't difficult to use. I really like the portability and the fact that you can get a cover for it. I decided to buy this because I thought the price was good and I wanted to take it when I walk. I also like that the GB are upgradable. This has other features such as an alarm clock and video capablities which I haven't done yet. I haven't compared it to any other MP3 players. Overall I'm quite happy with the iPod.
