Perhaps it's misleading to use the term Datora as it is so closely related with the manufacturer , BREITLING . As some of the worlds buyers of fine Swiss/Suisse movement watches are aware, there was a time that a tariff/tax was leveed on this market that covered a span of 3 decades between the 1940's and the 1970's. In order to successfully sidestep a tax that would otherwise create a steep decrease in luxury watch sales, high end firms had to look at the letter, not the spirit of the law. Breitling, a firm known for fashion, luxury and sports timepieces rivaling the quality offerings of firms such as Rolex, Philippe Patek et. al., made the bold and straight interpretation of the import law work in their favor. Purchasing the right to use the name of Wakmann, securing a facility in ... Perhaps it's misleading to use the term Datora as it is so closely related with the manufacturer , BREITLING . Instead, they shipped separate elements of their watches , such a movements and hands separate from dials and cases and put them together in New York, USA Those domestic customers of Breitling were sent brochures informing them of the company's decision to expand their respected watch production in their new New York facility and were shown many of the identical (albeit difference of name) pieces offered in their international catalogue. Although it may not have affected the buyers with more money than sense it opened the door once again for Breitling to the greater upper middle class market. Rather than the story ending here it is, for the Wakmann Incabloc Chronograph, just the beginning. Without paying for the Breitling Datora name, or for that matter firms such as Rolex in their offer of a triple dater of the same Suisse 70/700 series in the 3-6 thousand range and higher, an excellent to mint specimen can be occasionally found for less than 2 thousand. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending which side of the market you are on, the Wakmann name is starting to develop a following and this example as many of their higher end chronographs even more rapidly. I suggest, being a person fortunate enough to own one which I will never part with (was my dad's) that you keep an eye out for a very well cared for one while they are still relatively plentiful and buy it if the price is right for you. Good luck if looking for one of these 'always' in style pieces...and as in all items of value, buy the very best example of it you can afford, because you may not be able to afford restoring a lesser one.
