This was one of Heathkit's better instruments. It is stable and (if properly calibrated) quite accurate. It does suffer from two flaws that should always be corrected when a unit is upgraded. These are use of a battery to power the ohms circuit and use of a 6AL5 tube as the ac volts measurement rectifier. Upgrading should power the ohms function internally, with no need for a battery. It should also replace the 6AL5 tube with two silicon diode rectifiers. When these upgrades are done, and the unit is fully tested and calibrated on ALL FUNCTIONS AND RANGES, it is an excellent instrument.

It's hard to beat a classic VTVM design used by Heathkit for decades. Simple, reliable design, accurate, and very easy to calibrate. I found one un-soldered connection missed by the kit builder, replaced the electrolytic capacitor and one paper capacitor. Both tubes were fine, and the zero balance and calibration easy to achieve. It's a great addition to the test bench for those applications where an analog meter is a better choice. Heathkit sold thousands of these over the years with many different model numbers having essentially identical designs. Why not, it worked very well and was very reliable, why fix it?

The best Heathkit VTVM, this meter is most likely the best VTVM that Heathkit. Being able to read a small AC voltage in the presents of 500VDC is great without loading down the circuit. Just take precautions when working with high voltage. But for tuning tube amplifiers and tube radios they can not be beat!

I have not had time to evaluate the current condition of this particular Heathkit meter. When I eventually restore it, I will add to this report. Until then, you can't go wrong with the old Heathkit products. Pauljs

I'd been looking, on and off quite awhile, for a nice clean original example of the Heath bench VTVM and finally found one. I built the earlier version of this VTVM when I was in high school 50 some years ago and regret giving that one away. these are not HP quality, but they function well, even today. I've been a collector and restorer of Collins Radio equipment for more than 50 years. These analog VTVM's are excellent for aligning RF and IF stages in vintage equipment like Collins. Using the IM-28 brings back memories of growing up in simpler, better times. If you don't have a HP 410-B, restore a Heathkit VTVM.
