The Collection - Ultravox (CD 1996)
Pioneered by Ultravox, the "New Romantic" movement of the eighties spawned a plethora of fashion conscious synth-pop bands. Ultravox's "The Collection" spans the evolution of the band beginning with the induction of Midge Ure on "Vienna" (1980) through "Lament" (1984), the last album on which all four members played. As a retrospective, "The Collection" accomplishes its goal, to provide a compilation of Ultravox's chart-toppers. From their signature composition "Vienna" (#2 on the U.K charts) to their most well known song (thanks largely to MTV), "Dancing with Tears in My Eyes", the CD (originally released on vinyl) offers a well-rounded taste of a band that influenced many eighties acts, including Tears for Fears and Simple Minds. Billy Currie forged thoughtful and melodic arrangements that swirl through your head long after the CDs finished playing. Ure's voice, equally unique, provides the perfect complement. Particular highlights include the afore-mentioned "Vienna" (from the release of the same name), "The Voice" (from "Rage in Eden", "Reap the Wild Wind", "Hymn" and "Visions in Blue" (from "Quartet, produced by George Martin at the behest of his daughter, who loved the band), "Love's Great Adventure", "Dancing with Tears in My Eyes" and "Lament" (both from "Lament"). If you enjoyed New Wave, this CD is a requirement for your collection.

Good collection of Ultravox, but a little dated. Midge's solo work might be better if you are not accustomed to the style of Ultravox. Good, but dated.
