About this product

Product Information

A visionary work that combines speculative fiction with deep philosophical inquiry, The Sparrow tells the story of a charismatic Jesuit priest and linguist, Emilio Sandoz, who leads a scientific mission entrusted with a profound task: to make first contact with intelligent extraterrestrial life. The mission begins in faith, hope, and beauty, but a series of small misunderstandings brings it to a catastrophic end. Praise for The Sparrow "A startling, engrossing, and moral work of fiction." -- The New York Times Book Review "Important novels leave deep cracks in our beliefs, our prejudices, and our blinders. The Sparrow is one of them." -- Entertainment Weekly "Powerful . . . The Sparrow tackles a difficult subject with grace and intelligence." -- San Francisco Chronicle "Provocative, challenging . . . recalls both Arthur C. Clarke and H. G. Wells, with a dash of Ray Bradbury for good measure." -- The Dallas Morning News "[Mary Doria] Russell shows herself to be a skillful storyteller who subtly and expertly builds suspense." -- USA Today

An entertaining infusion of humor keeps the book from becoming too dark, although some of the characters are so clever that they sometimes seem contrived. Readers who dislike an emphasis on moral dilemmas or spiritual quests may be turned off, but those who enjoy science fiction because it can create these things are in for a real treat." --Science Fiction Weekly "The Sparrowtackles a difficult subject with grace and intelligence." --San Francisco Chronicle "The Sparrowis an incredible novel, for one reason. Though it is set in the early twenty-first century, it is not written like most science fiction. Russell's novel is driven by her characters, by their complex relationships and inner conflicts, not by aliens or technology." --Milwaukee Journal Sentinel "It is rare to find a book about interplanetary exploration that has this much insight into human nature and foresight into a possible future." --San Antonio Express News "Two narratives--the mission to the planet and its aftermath four decades later--interweave to create a suspenseful tale." --The Seattle Times "By alternating chapters that dramatize Sandoz's tough-love interrogation with flashbacks to the mission's genesis, flowering, and tragic collapse, The Sparrowcasts a strange, unsettling emotional spell, bouncing readers from scenes of black despair to ones of wild euphoria, from the bracing simplicity of pure adventure to the complicated tangles of nonhuman culture and politics.--The smooth storytelling and gorgeous characterization can't be faulted." --Entertainment Weekly From the Trade Paperback edition., Excerpts from reviews of Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow "It is science fiction brought back to the project with which it began in the hands of a writer like Jules Verne: the necessity of wonder, the hope for moral rectitude, and the possibility of belief." --America "Russell's debut novel...focuses on her characters, and it is here that the work truly shines. • An exceptional journey of discovery through, space and time.

I bought this copy to replace one I gave away because I enjoyed the book very much. This was a unique fictional account of a first contact with an alien race. Several humans make the eight month journey to a distant planet where the origin of musical harmonies had been detected. Upon their arrival, the discovery of two separate and distinct species of humanoids become evident. The author indicates through events that occur, how miscommunications can cause horrible and irreparable damage to all involved. Making the journey are a few Jesuit priests, since the trip is funded by the Catholic church. An atheist, a long married, loving couple, the young male scientist, who made the initial discovery are some of the characters the author makes you familiar with. The author has a definate gift of ...

  • Number One on my list of top ten books.

I checked this book out of my local library, once I had read it; I had to own a copy. The author's writing style is compelling, the subject is original, and best of all... it has a sequel. I have recommended (or given.) this book to a number of people, and the feedback is always positive

  • A Not So Sci-Fi

If you aren't a sci-fi lover, no worries. Sci-fi is never a genre I would pick up (I usually prefer historical fiction), but this story (and its sequel) is a page turner. The woman is a fantastic writer. I keep buying used copies to give to friends. I have given this book to 5 other people and they all loved the story. SOME of the story takes place on another planet, but the social issues that are brought up make the reader consider the way we deal with other cultures in our own world. It's an interesting and moving story.

  • One of my favorite books of all time!

The year is 2019 and intelligent life is discovered on another planet. What should we do? The Jesuits decided to send a mission to explore the planet and find out more about those living there. The book is written with two story lines side by side. One follows the original mission to Rakhat and the other follows the story of the only survivor of the mission once he returns to Earth. This is definitely a thought provoking novel that is well worth your time to read. It will leave you wanting more and ready to read the sequel, Children of God.
