Hey, it is great. Even had a working set of special probes.

The multimeter was not safe to turn on. The ground pin had been removed from the plug and the on/off switch bypassed so it was "hot" as soon as plugged in. The probe had faulty connections at both ends that had to be resoldered. Ohms function would not work due to a corroded battery and a faulty circuit board connection. After fixing all of that, I still can't get the AC function of the meter to work. It's a Heathkit and I'm guessing it was never wired correctly and AC may never have worked. Circuit board solder joints were poor. Even with all the problems, it was sold to me "as is" so maybe I shouldn't complain. But it should not have been sold with the "power plug - switch" safety problems, and it only takes two seconds to see if it works to measure ohms.

The Heathkit IM-18, like the earlier IM-11 and later IM-5218 was in its day a good general purpose VTVM. It does suffer from a few design faults, so you need to know what you are buying. Like most VTVMs it uses a battery to power the ohms function. It also uses a 6AL5 tube to rectify the ac voltage being measured. Neither of these should still have been used after the 1960s because good silicon diode rectifiers were then available allowing solid state ac rectification and powering the ohms function from the filament circuit. If you buy a unit that has been refurbished and upgraded to incorporate these changes you are getting a good deal, otherwise probably not. One other design flaw has to do with the two lowest ac voltage scales. Many other VTVMs (even Heathkits) have separate scales for the two lowest ac voltage ranges. This is necessary due to nonlinearity of the ac rectification at low voltage. The small Heathkit VTVMs lack these separate ac scales so the two lowest ac voltage ranges are not accurate. This flaw cannot be fixed.Read full review

Received the meter and it worked. Downloaded the Heathkit instructions, calibrated it and it works. I aligned my 1947 Philco with it and both work perfectly.
