The Heathkit IM-16 is a good instrument...IF
The Heathkit model IM-16 solid state voltmeter is a solid state version of a vacuum tube voltmeter. It has no vacuum tubes in it, but on the outside it works just like a VTVM. It has an 11 megohm dc input resistance, with one megohm in the dc probe tip and it measures dc volts, ac volts and ohms using the same 15-50-150 range scales as most VTVMs. Ohms measurement works the same way as on a VTVM. The instrument was designed to work from either commercial ac power or from batteries, but because of its size it is not likely that many people will want to use it as a portable battery operated unit. Like most VTVMs, however the instrument requires a flashlight battery to power the ohms function, even when running on commercial ac power. This is its major drawback because the battery is small ... Batteries also make poor contact with the battery holder and are prone to leakage that can damage the instrument. IF... one of these instruments has been refurbished and upgraded to eliminate the need for an ohms battery when running on ac power, the IM-16 becomes an excellent instrument and a good replacement for a regular vacuum tube voltmeter.
