A three-game-in-one title, Smurfs Save The Day (which comes with the Kid Vid "voice module") combines simple educational games for little gamers. In "Harmony Smurf," players guide a Smurf around the screen to press specific keys and reproduce melodies played by the "voice module" (this game is very much like the electronic toy Simon). Players guide another Smurf in "Greedy Smurf," following a simple formula in which their Smurf must mix primary colors to match the secondary color shown by the computer. And in "Handy Smurf," players help a harried Smurf sort shapes from a conveyor belt by size, shape or color.<br> <br>Back when speech synthesis was a luxury and not a built-in-feature for most videogame consoles, Coleco had a novel idea for bringing talking games to the Atari VCS: pre-record the voices and sounds on a specially-encoded audio cassette, to be played in the "Kid Vid Voice Module" (in reality, a specially-wired tape player which connected to the second joystick port on the Atari VCS). If this means of speech synthesis wasn't awkward enough, tape-swapping was also required (Smurfs Save The Day came with three cassettes). Only one other Kid Vid game, Berenstein Bears (based on a series of popular children's books), hit the shelves. The secret of encoding real (though very short-duration) speech synthesis was later cracked with Quadrun.
