I then drove 30 minutes to the nearest Retro Game Store for them to try it out, only to discover that the provided cable was faulty. I purchased a new cable and drove home, where it finally worked correctly. Overall, not a great experience right from the start.

    Exactly what I wanted

    Since these are relatively cheap and easy to fix (if you know what you're doing) buying a broken one and fixing is a great way to play GameCube games legally without breaking the bank.
