Based on Alice Hoffman's novel of the same name, Practical Magic tells the story of two sister witches, Gillian (Nicole Kidman) and Sally Owens(Sandra Bullock, who live with their eccentric aunts, all of whom are shunned by the rest of the villagers for being considered weird. Not only that, but it seems that Owens women are doomed to live their lives without love, for their family bloodline has a terrible curse on it, left by their ancestor Maria. It states that any man who dares fall in love with an Owens woman shall suffer a most horrendous death. The sister's powers are challenged when they meddle with dark magick, and are soon haunted by the ghost of one of Gillian's dead lovers. A lovely film worth watching!
This film was great, just as I recalled it when it was first released. It was particularly interesting when all the "town ladies" joined in the ritual to break the spell. The characters seemed realistic as small town people can be both cruel, and kind, from my personal experience.
