The trick is to remember that the generator ($4000) itself is just the tip of the iceberg. You also need one or more transfer switches ($600 ea). And we had to add a gas line ($3000). And pay to hook up the gas ($3000). And get an electrician involved ($4000). All told it ran close to $17000. Silly me to worry about a few hundred dollars on the generator itself.
