I grew up listening to the Kingston Trio. They were one of my dad's favorite groups, and definitely my favorite of the music he listened to. For me, listening to these discs is like going back to visit with him, so this review may be a little skewed by nostalgia, especially because he died so recently. I'll try to be even handed. There's great humor in many of the songs (especially MTA) and great feeling in all of them. While MTA lifts you up with its satirical look at a guy who can't get off of a subway train in Boston because of a new tax that he can't afford to pay, Tom Dooley brings you back to earth and takes you to the other side where you'll experience the sadness that a young man feels because he has been condemned to die at the hands of the hangman the next morning. All in all, the harmonic singing and beautiful playing of the guitars and banjo make this a very enjoyable disc to have in your library. A lot of folk music from this period has not aged well... it's very much a product of its time. Even though many of the themes of the songs are universal, I'd have to say that the same is true of the Kingston Trio, which is why they've been relegated to playing concerts on PBS rather than on a bigger stage. Do I recommend the album to everyone? No. Do I recommend it to someone wanting to look back on a specific moment in American history? Absolutely! Whether you're a survivor of those times or just someone who wants a broader musical education than you'll get from listening to the radio, this is a great collection of very good songs from one of that era's best groups!Read full review

The Very Best of The Kingston Trio is a real good cd! There is some really good songs with an excellent sounding bluegrass type of beat! Most of the songs are story songs or songs that sent popular messages during the late 1950s and early 1960s such as hoping for peace. The patriotic hit " This Land Is Your Land " is also on this album. I really like classic country and classic rock music and I really like this album!
