I wanted to know which pharmaceutical pills were ones that caused greater harm than good as my aging (90 yrs old) father-in-law seemed 'more doped up' recently in his nursing home. As we know, every commercial on t.v. about any drug gives you a one minute flash of how great it is and with at least three minutes of some pretty serious warnings. Listen to these commercials closely next time one comes on and be aware of the dangers they list. What's greater, the cure or the danger? After receiving the book, my husband and I learned that several pills my father-in-law is taking has high warnings of long-term use and reactions when used with other meds. None of which we knew and, of course, the doctors, strangely enough, are not... 'aware of?' Our society is so drug dependent on 'meds' to feel better, hoping for a cure. Problem is, most meds, only seem to make you 'feel' better and it is short term. Hopefully, no health issues arise that you didn't expect due to taking a chemical that human bodies aren't designed for. We need to become more aware of what we allow others, especially ones that we trust without question, of what we put in our bodies, especially for the aged. This book allows that to happen. Get it, read it, be open minded about it, confirm it with other reviews if necessary, and then take the necessary steps to approach and remove yourself from it if it is doing more harm than good. Don't let medicine own you or the pharmaceutical companies. Be smart by getting educated using this book as the first step, take charge, find more natural healing processes; they are out there! If Europe can do it, why aren't we? Eat right and only natural earth grown foods-staying away from processed foods (boxed and canned) and foods with additives (such as aspartame, which causes multiple sclerosis symptoms - and now its in gum & candy - and we wonder why childhood 'cancer' is on the rise). These food chemicals cause danger to our bodies over time. Exercise (GET UP and MOVE if thats all you can do), read labels, ask your doctor questions and don't be so trusting, and READ THIS BOOK to be better educated in pharmaceuticals. If you aren't on any medication. Fantastic! Read it anyway, as you may have parents, friends, or co-workers who are over-medicated, and someday, you may be too. Did you know, Doctors get a percentage from the pharmaceutical company for every prescription they write by endorsing certain drugs? With all the drugs we have in this country given by doctors, why aren't we the healthiest country on the earth? Is it about health or... money. An excellent reference book describing what to expect if taking a particular drug. This is an updated version (which I believe has been updated again) which includes more recently FDA approved drugs. If you know people who use prescription drugs (Americans consume 70% of the world's drugs in spite of being only 4.25% of the world's population), this book is a good guide to hazards buried in lists of side effects of prescriptions, or a good reference to use to question your doctor's recommendation.
I am not a Doctor, nor do I know very much about medicines. That is why I rely so much on this book. I have this same book in the 1993 Version. I bought 2 of these books. One to upgrade mine, and one to give to my Doctor. Too many Senior Citizens are given medicines that are too strong for their systems, and this book tells you why. It tells the pill catagory of: "Do Not Take", should take in a "Limited Use", and the ones that are OK to take. I would not be without my Worst Pill, Best Pill Book, it is very informative for the novice.
One of the best books on side effects. Might save your life.
