Not A Slider
I've used Mackie mixers for decades now, both as a professional sound mixer and as a musician, I've found Mackie to be the best investment in sound gear when it comes to how durable and long-lasting they are. Up until now, I've only used the VLZ series mixers, so my foray into the Onyx series is new. For the price, I wish Mackie would have went ahead and put sliders on the Onyx 8 and made the board size just a bit bigger. I suppose it's compact, but I prefer the feel of sliders over the mini knobs and I don't mind the additional real estate need for this feature on a mixer. Also, the SD recording feature seems effective. It's one of the reasons I purchased this board, so I didn't have to carry a separate Zoom H4N with me to recording sessions, plus I thought I could use it to ... It's one of the reasons I purchased this board, so I didn't have to carry a separate Zoom H4N with me to recording sessions, plus I thought I could use it to over-sample my phono pre-amp for high-definition album dubs from my high-line phono cartridge. I have yet to try it for this, so we'll see. I needed to replace my old and tired VLZ 1402, which served me well for almost 20 years and I bought it used, which means it's much older than that. It started to flake out on me during recording sessions by presenting gated audio on my recordings from the control room outputs, It sounded normal under headphones, so the problem is somewhere in the output buss between the headphones and the CR output. I took it apart to try cleaning the switches and pots, but everything is surface mount or sealed, so you can't really patch up these old VLZ boards short of just replacing components, and I don't have the new-school soldering equipment to do that sort of thing, so I thought it was time for a new board, something more computer friendly. Oh, and that's another thing, you must have Windows 10 or higher to use the ASIO driver you download from Mackie to use USB on your PC. I have yet to see if the generic ASIO driver built into older OS versions will still allow 16 bit 48kHz recording though this mixer. I hate that everything you buy now relies on a newer version of Windows. I could barely afford a new mixer, let alone update my computers, too. I think at this price point, this mixer could have been more fully featured like the VLZ 1402 with two more mic inputs. I would happily trade the stupid FX section for the full 4 channel buss and extra mics. Mackie, could you please make this mixer in the 1402 config with sliders? Get rid of the noise making FX and be serious instead of trying to be like Behringer. I don't like that I can't reset the numbering order of the file naming either, it really bugs me I can't start the file count at 0001 at will. The online manual mentions nothing about it. I thought, too, like some of the other multi-track mixers on the market today that one would get an output file for each channel in the mixer, so mixes could be done in post. It would be nice for it to do this so I can finally play with encoding surround sound, but apparently it's not available on the Onyx 8. I suppose to get better features, one has to choke up more money, but to me, this board was already pricey and should have been able to do this. The Zoom does it and for a lot less money. I know Mackies last and are well built, but a budget is still a budget and one can only afford what one can afford. But, I guess the era of high value for your hard-earned dollar is over. I'm glad I was able to find this on Ebay for a better price than anywhere else, so I did save a little. As best as I can tell, the mic pre-amps are absolutely quiet when terminated with a mic. Even when un-terminated, this mixer still makes less self-noise with the input gains turned wide open than my old VLZ mixer does. The specs are very good and I can't wait to getting to producing some new live recordings with it. I doubt if I'll ever seriously use Bluetooth, that's really a podcaster thing. This board can't make up its mind whether it's music board or a podcaster board. I suppose the redeeming quality of the built-in recorder is that it is stereo unlike its podcaster cousins. But one does have to settle for live stereo mixes, which is kind of old-school. Fortunately I have a lot of experience doing it this way. For some, many of the feature sets on this mixer will probably be useful, for me though, I bought it mainly for USB and built-in recorder capabilities, plus I wanted lower distortion, higher dynamic range and super-low noise. So far, I think it does well in those areas, plus it's built well and isn't flimsy or full of plastic like so many others on the market. I just wish there were more flexible with the USB driver for older OSes. I suppose it'll grow on me in time, Mackies usually do. But I still want it with sliders!
