Dans le village de Werst, Frick, un berger, remarque un jour qu'une fum e semble sortir du ch teau en ruine de Rodolphe de Gortz: l' difice serait donc nouveau habit . Cette nouvelle terrifie les villageois, persuad s que le ch teau est hant et que ce sont des fant mes qui sont venus l'occuper. Le jeune forestier Nick Deck accompagn du Docteur du village d cident d'aller au ch teau mais sont victimes de surprenants ph nom nes. C'est ce moment-l qu'arrive au village le jeune comte Franz de T lek. Il apprend la situation du ch teau et est frapp par le nom de son propri taire. Le narrateur revient quelques ann es en arri re pour raconter l'histoire d'une cantatrice italienne, la Stilla. chaque repr sentation, la jeune femme, fianc e au jeune comte Franz de T lek, sent peser sur elle un regard terrifiant; il s'agit du baron Rodolphe de Gortz, follement pris d'elle. Or, le jour o elle doit se marier, elle meurt en sc ne, comme transperc e par ce regard. Les deux rivaux en con oivent une haine r ciproque, chacun tenant l'autre pour responsable du d c s de la Stilla, Rodolphe de Gortz allant jusqu' crire au comte pour le maudire. Depuis, Franz de T lek voyage pour oublier sa douleur, ce qui l'a amen au village de Werst, o se trouve le ch teau de son ennemi maudit. Il d cide d'explorer le ch teau. Ayant r ussi y p n trer, Franz entend et voit la Stilla chanter. Il est fait prisonnier par Rodolphe de Gortz mais r ussit s' chapper et retrouve son rival en compagnie, croit-il, de la Stilla. Mais lorsqu'il se pr cipite vers elle, Rodolphe de Gortz la poignarde et la cantatrice vole en clats. Orfanik fait exploser le ch teau et son ma tre aussi. En fouillant dans les d combres, on retrouve Franz de T lek rendu fou par l'explosion. L' pilogue de l'histoire lucide le myst re: Orfanik, l'inventeur maudit et excentrique de Rodolphe de Gortz, dont le nom signifie orphelin (orfan) en roumain, avait mis au point un syst me qui permettait Rodolphe de Gortz de projeter sur un miroir un portrait en pied de la Stilla tout en diffusant sa voix qu'il avait enregistr e sur des rouleaux l'occasion des derni res repr sentations de la chanteuse.
