I bought this book for a class. Overall, I liked it very much; however, I am a religious history major, so most of the book was not new to me. Friedman uses the Documentary Source Hypothesis, which is a theory that the Torah, or first five books of the Bible, were not composed by Moses or even by a single person; but that they are instead a compilation of at least four sources (usually called J, E, P, and D). I want to strongly emphasize that Friedman's ending is especially apt, in that he reminds his readers that although he attempts (through a combination of careful Scriptural analysis and archaeological evidence) to identify the various people who might have first written down a number of books in the Bible, he never once disputes the fact that the authors might have been inspired by ... I bought this book for a class. Overall, I liked it very much; however, I am a religious history major, so most of the book was not new to me. Many Christians, for example, believe that the scribes who recorded the first books of the Bible were filled with the Holy Spirit. If you are a person (and I have met many) who honestly believes that every word of the Bible (in every translation) is the exact word of God, written down in God's own hand, for God's own reasons- then I definetly would encourage you to buy this book (and read it!). For those already knowledgable in religious studies, Friedman doesn't really offer too much that's very new. I had already known most of what was in the book, or at least heard it suggested by other scholars (as far as actual names go). His more substantial contribution is in his identifying the context in which each writer probably wrote, and he gives very strong evidence for each. He also focses on the "Redactor" -again, someone I had heard suggested before, but he does a good job of contexualizing everything, and it is easy to read the book even as a non-scholarly work. My only major complaint is that I would have greatly preffered footnotes to endnotes, but I suppose that Friedman was trying to increase the book's appeal to the general public. Overall, an excellent book.

Much more interesting than the title. I learned a huge amount about a topic with which I was already familiar. Anyone interested in ancient history, archeology, anthropology, and theology would benefit by reading this book.
